Rossendale Families ready to ‘Free all Monsters’ this autumn

Rossendale families are being encouraged to visit artworks along the Irwell Sculpture Trail to find and free all the monsters that are lurking there.

The monsters will be part of a World- wide game, launching now, which encourages collectors to compete for online monster spotting awards.

Rossendale Council teamed up with Foldup Community Interest Company and Lancaster University to develop the interactive smartphone based game.

Local young people were responsible for imagining and designing monsters that would live near to sculptures such as Remnant Kings at Irwell Vale and the Halo in Haslingden.

Using global positioning technology, the game helps participants to view otherwise invisible monsters on their smartphone screens.
The game is already being played around the world by a number of different users and this is the first time that some monsters on the game will have a specific home. The game’s developers hope that collectors will visit Rossendale to get their exclusive Irwell Sculpture Trail monsters.

Cllr Andy McNae, Rossendale’s regeneration lead said: “This is a fun and exciting project, which will once again put the Irwell Sculpture Trail on the map for families from Rossendale and beyond.”

Cllr Helen Jackson, portfolio holder for communities said: “This project has already generated a lot of interest and community involvement through the design workshops. As the game is now available to download, Rossendale families should be ready to visit the Irwell Sculpture Trail to free all monsters! The game, in addition to being good fun, will get young people engaging with the sculptures in a new way, as well as encouraging them to get out and about in our wonderful countryside’
