These five sculptural birds were created to signal the entrance to Bacup in Rossendale. They refer to Bacup’s rich industrial history but also look to the town’s future as a vibrant and thriving 21st Century place.

The theme of flight reflects the optimism that underpins the revitalisation that is currently taking place in Bacup.

The work extends to the design of the railings which reflect Bacup’s industrial heritage, each representing one of the many important industries that contributed to the growth of the Lancashire town such as coal mining, quarrying, cotton milling, shoe making, The Deer Play Hunt and Coconutters.

The designs of the railings and the sculpture were developed through a series of art workshops with local metal work artists. Five concepts were developed around the theme of flight and put to the public vote to decide the final design.
